Multiculturalism is defined as the recognition of ethnic diversity and appreciating the contributions of this diversity to the well being of the society (Lott, 2010). The concept of multiculturalism recognizes that cultural background is responsible for the differences in behavior that exists between different people. People come from different backgrounds with different cultural practices and beliefs. In multiculturalism, the first step is to identify these differences. Ethnic and cultural diversity at the work place, at schools and in the society in general is identified depending on the upbringing of each person. The second step is to appreciate these differences and respect each person for their cultural identity. Additionally, in multiculturalism, each person is allowed to retain their cultural identity (Lott, 2010). These differences are tapped and used to the advantage of the organization and the society as a whole.
At another level, multiculturalism is also defined as a situation where one person has different cultural backgrounds. A person born from parents with a variety of cultural backgrounds may decide to adopt both cultures thus being referred to as multicultural. Additionally, multiculturalism is also defined as the ability by politicians to advance the well being of all people without considering their ethnic background and without advancing a certain culture as the dominant culture (Lott, 2010). People in the modern society have different approaches to multiculturalism. Some support the interaction of people from different cultures which results in the formation of a new culture. Others argue that people should associate with others from different cultures but should retain their original cultural identity.
Diversity is also defined using different meanings depending on personal interpretations of the term. In most cases, cultural diversity is used as a synonym for multiculturalism where people are encouraged to tolerate others from different cultural backgrounds (Lott, 2010). Diversity in the work place means that an organization employs people from different backgrounds and taps into the differences in order to understand its customers from different backgrounds. Diversity in the political field refers to differences in gender, age, cultural background, income among other differences (Lott, 2010). Those who support diversity in the political field suggest that political leaders should be drawn from all sections of the society.
In comparison with the definitions given in class, these definitions are more varied as they approach multiculturalism and diversity from several perspectives. From this analysis, it is clear that multiculturalism and diversity are terms which are applicable to different fields of life. As opposed to only describing the cultural sense of multiculturalism and diversity, these definitions approach the issue from the business and political perspectives.
In my opinion, multiculturalism is the freedom to retain one’s cultural identity without being coerced to adopt the cultural behavior of other people. Additionally, I view multiculturalism from the view that cultural differences should not be used as a discriminating factor. Through multiculturalism, people should be able to appreciate and respect the cultural practices and beliefs of other people. In my view, diversity encompasses a wider range of definitions. In line with what has been described above, diversity can encompass differences in gender, cultural, physical abilities, age, sexual orientation and many other differences that exist among people. At the work place, multiculturalism or cultural diversity is applicable as people from different backgrounds work together in harmony. Additionally, cultural diversity is not used as a discriminating factor on who gets what job. On the contrary, company management prefers to employ people from different cultural backgrounds in order to advance diversity in the provision of services. At school, diversity can be seen from the differences in gender, age and ethnic background.
