The recent cyber-attack reported by CISA (2020) involved commodity ransomware that affected the pipeline control systems and communication assets relating to the operational technology network of a United States natural gas compression facility. Reading this resource makes it clear that ransomware is becoming a rampant way of cyber-attacks targeting the contemporary critical infrastructure sectors and assets. This poses new challenges cybersecurity, especially to facilities where the emergency response strategy focuses on the physical aspects of critical infrastructure and not the cyber aspects. The reading helps in understanding how CISA assesses ransomware-related situations. Particularly, I understand that the agency adopts a technical and architectural framework that assesses these situations by leveraging Mitre adversarial common knowledge, techniques, and tactics.
