Importance of safety professionals to have an understanding of EPA training requirements

It is essential for safety professionals to understand the training requirements of EPA to prevent accidents and any illness that may be caused from work thus promoting health. The knowledge of EPA contributes to competency in health and safety for employees and even the public preventing business from encountering distress and financial costs that occupational ill health and accidents cause. The professionals should be provided with health information since the business requires and depends on them. The employees undergoing training should improve their confidence and behavior at work as well as have a direct effect on their performance quality.

The major role is to implement surveillance planning in areas of occupational injuries or health hazards. Through training programs NIOSH role is to assist in the reduction in occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities by working together with various agencies, partners etc. in training.

the differences between asbestos abatement training and asbestos awareness training

Asbestos awareness training mainly deals with the risk of exposure to asbestos and how to avoid it. ABT deals with effect on health, type and uses of asbestos and general procedure to deal with emergency mainly for cleaning and minor maintenance task. Asbestos abatement training is for work involving direct handling of ACM. It deals with work area preparation, proper handling and disposal of ACM wastes and worker decontamination procedure for professionals.

the connection between OSHA and EPA regarding hazardous waste operations.

EPA and OSHA are responsible for maintaining safety and health of the public through federal law and implementing regulations. In 1991 there was a joint agreement where there would be sufficient improvement of information exchange relating to safety and health as well as protection of public health and environment. This was a sort of MOU in relation to inspection that defined, if an agency finds violation in the other agency area they should alert each other, especially on improper waste disposal procedure.

Why are most of the hazardous waste training requirements listed in the OSHA standards and not in the EPA standards?

EPA is responsible for threats to public health and the environment (air and water pollution) while OSHA responsible with workplace safety and healthy working conditions. PA functions have to undergo rule making, technical reviews and involve issuance of permits. OSHA is regulated by the OSHA act and OSHA standards apply to all businesses that have employee’s. OSHA standards mainly deal with workplace safety and are designed to protect employees against workplace hazards. This is the reason why most are listed in OSHA standards and not in EPA.OSHA health standards protect against illnesses that manifest many years after initial exposure such as asbestos.
