Recent research in neuroscience and epidemiology led by Dr. Gary Slutkin indicates that violence mimics other contagious and epidemic diseases. Violence like the most infectious disease has signs and symptoms that can lead to physical injury or mortality and can be transmitted from person to person. Individuals exposed to a lot of violence are more susceptible to commit violent acts. In the past two decades, health control methods have been used to curb and reduce community violence in more than five continents around the world. For instance, in the U.S. in the state of Chicago, Illinois, gun violence was greatly reduced by the introduction of the violence cure model. Currently, gun and street violence has been greatly reduced since the introduction of a violence prevention method.

According to Dr. Slutkin, violence can be prevented through behaviour change and epidemic control methods. In the state of Chicago, Illinois, people who were familiar with everybody in the neighbourhood and trusted were hired to work in the roughest neighbourhoods. These workers were referred to as violence interrupters and they detected the cases that could lead to violence and its transmission. The same workers were used to intervene and calm down those situations.

Zak Ebrahim’s father was an Egyptian-born American citizen and a jihadist by the name of El Sayyid Nosair. El Sayyid Nosair was born on 16 November 1955. In 1990 he was tried for the assassination of Jewish religious and political figures of which he was acquitted. He was later convicted of various charges including the involvement in the 1993 New York City bomb plot. He was also linked Osama bin Laden

Zak Ebrahim is an author and a peace campaigner. His life changed considerably after the conviction of his father .Zak spent most of his young life moving from one city to another. As a young kid, he was raised to think of jews as an Arab’s natural foe. While attending a youth convention, he interacted and made friends with a Jewish boy. This led to a realization that much of what he had been taught as a child was a lie. Zak participated in TED’s talk in 2013 and now spends most of his time spreading the message of peace and the effects of terrorism and violence.
