The Institute of Medicine has stated a goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. According to HealthyPeople.gov, the United States is currently at approximately 15%. Discuss two barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal, and suggest ways in which identified barriers may be addressed.

One of the first thing we learn as nurses when dealing with care plans is to make sure the goal is realistic. 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020 is not realistic. In the nurses field there are many barriers in the way of making this goal happen. The first barriers is all of the older nurses and anyone of the nurses that are set in their ways. It is hard to makes changes across the board and not expect some resistant. When someone has a certain way of doing something and then someone comes in and tries to change the way they do things it will be hard for them to except the change. The next barrier in the way of this goal is we are still learning things on a daily basis. To have all practice be at 90% by 2020 is nearly impossible because even after 2020 we has nurses will still be learning more things and better ways to do things. The first barrier can be overcome as long as we try to implement the change in blocks because if you try to make a huge change across the board they will resist the change. Make sure the change is gradual and then they will be more likely to adjust to the change. The second barrier can’t be overcome because of the lack of knowledge we have.
