Writing Assignment  Microbial Diversity Report

BIO 2060 Writing Assignment  Microbial Diversity Report [25 points]

Each student will be assigned a microorganism for this report.  Check your “Assigned M/O number”  from your Blackboard grade center and then use Table 1 (below) to find your assigned microorganism  name.  Please research this microorganism using the textbook (by searching the Index) AND/OR online  resources.  Please use your own words to address the questions in the same sequence as it listed below  without the bullet points and repeating the questions.  Please limit your write‐up to 250 ‐ 300 words.   Please be aware that scientific name of the organism should be typed in a proper format as instructed in  the lecture.  You may include references at the bottom of your write‐up and they are not counted  toward the word limit or similarity score (Blackboard/Turnitin).  To avoid problem, please type your  report in a Word file and upload it in Blackboard under the “Assignment Submission” tab.

Address each of the questions in the same order without the bullet numbers and repeating the  questions.  1. What is the Domain and Phylum for classification of this microorganism?  2. What is its natural habitats  3. What are the key characteristics of this organism? Describe its distinctive and unique structure and

function (Please make sure you include the morphology, cell wall composition, photosynthesis,  motility device, etc.  If the information is not available for individual species, you could expand your  research to its family, class, phylum, or even the domain)

4. How do they reproduce? What are the life cycles (in a simple way, e.g. sexual, asexual cycle, spores,  stages, structures, etc.) (For prokaryotes, reproduction should be simple, but you still need to  mention it)

5. What is the importance of this microorganism? (e.g. what diseases, problems, and/or beneficial  roles)

Grading [25 points total]

 [15 points] Missing or having incorrect answer(s): up to 3 points for each question   [5 points] Correct writing of the scientific name of your microbe: deduct one point for each mistake    [5 points] Overall format, logic, easy to read, and cohesiveness of the writing and contents   Plagiarism is prohibited.  When you turn in your report on Blackboard, you will receive a similarity
