Part 1
The democratic party of Denver had vacancy for the senate seat after the then senator Chris Romer announced he will be resigning from his seat in the Colorado assembly. Elections for the senate were held in November 2010 and one of the candidates was john Hickenlooper who came first among his three opponents’ Dan and Tom. John has a background in both private and public ventures and is also equipped with good leadership skills that make him an ideal candidate for the governor seat. He is a geologist by profession but he has served as mayor for the Denver people a position which saw him make the government work efficiently and made Denver to be seen as a great city. In this position he also ensured a balance in the budge despite the decrease in the sales and got voter approval to reform the department of the police and the city’s career. He also ensured coalitions of the neighbors in Denver suburbs by building bridges across the suburbs.
In the office as mayor, he looked into the education policy with the aim of sending more children to school, and also got support from the private sector in sending more children to college. John also helped in raising taxes in the city of Denver. Therefore john’s nomination and endorsement to run for the governor seat was entirely based on his performance during his term in office as the mayor of Denver. He not only proved himself as a businessman but as a politician too though many people are not purely happy and supportive of him because of the failure to disclose a more detailed budget and the failure of the information of the recipients of the $3million that he gave away to charity. John is also famous for his independent way of thinking and his innovations that never fail to up lift the entire population.
Part 2
John hickenlooper opposed the three ballot measures, proposition 101 and the amendments 60 and 61, (Scott 2010). The measures would reduce the various taxes with the amendment 60 reducing the property taxes while the amendment 61 limiting the debit financing by the local government. John came first in the elections with a 51% win against the other two candidates who had 36% and 10%. Hickenlooper opposes all the three ballot measures which he says will put a strain on the government. He suggests that the reduction in the property and vehicle tax rates will definitely put a strain on the state with the reduced revenues falling back on the state finances an effect that will somehow fall back to the public.
John argues that the amendments will cause the government to be unable to provide even the most basic essentials like the supply of water and the construction of schools and provision of education. He is not against people paying taxes and he feels it’s a good way if the public wants to sustain itself economically and that it will encourage the improving of the living standards of the people in Colorado and give the state a better position in the planning for the people.
Hickenlooper business oriented mind played a key role in the judgment of the ballot measures with the people of Colorado believing in his judgment more because of the first-hand experience they had of him when he served as mayor of the city of Denver. His previous experience in serving as mayor gave him an upper hand over his opponents whom the public did not trust much. The ballot measures were proposal that would be added in the constitution and made law and the public knew very little of the implications.
