The Aeneid
For this assignment, the fifteenth passage is used. The people of Germany loved engaging in warfare and they took pride in it. If there was no war to engage in, they preferred hunting, in order to ensure that they were not idle. Others eat and slept as there was nothing interesting to do. In this society, strong men were the ones who fought in wars. On the other hand, old people, women, as well as the weak people in society, took care of all the house hold chores. This means that every person knew their duties and there were a distinction between men and women. Time was spent in various ways, in order to get rid of boredom. It makes one to wander whether they loved war or were just people who are idle.
According to the society, chiefs were accorded great respect as well as privileges. Everyone had to ensure that they gave gifts to the chief, which were in the form of agricultural produce as well as cattle. This went as far as the chiefs receiving gifts from other regions outside of Germany. The gifts were of extremely high value, such as collars, arms and horses. Soon afterwards, the people of Germany learnt the importance of money.
This passage shows the organization of the German society during that time in history. The main themes, which are brought about from the passage is the job occupations, as well as the hierarchy in the society. This means that every person had certain duties, which were allocated to them, also, the chiefs were held in high regard. The author wants to ensure that people are aware of the history of the German people. The author does not seem to concur with the activities of the German people. The men seem to benefit at the expense of the women. This is because they do nothing, as the women and the rest of society, work on their behalf. The rest of the society should be accorded respect for the role which they play. The author does not think that it is worthy to give the chief expensive gifts. Also, the fact that people from other regions are involved in this matter is not good either. Instead, the chiefs should find ways to help the society, especially the men who are lazing around. According to the author, men are not behaving as they are meant to. The society should be praised, as they believe in the benefits of working together for the good of all. In conclusion, German history ought to be known and how it has shaped their current society.
