Speech Outline: Solar Oven

Introduction

Do you know that humans have the ability to curb environmental degradation without undermining their quality of life? Solar ovens provide one of the most viable ways to pursue this goal. I wish to explore solar ovens in light of their invention, features, advantages and disadvantages. Solar ovens are very important in the current society because of their ability to save our dwindling natural resources without compromising our quality of life. Currently, we are paying huge amounts of money for the resources and at the same polluting out environment upon which our livelihood is based. Use of solar oven is important as it would enable us to counter these problems. The First, I shall review the invention and main features of solar ovens. Then, I will analyze the benefits and shortcomings of solar energy in order to enable you make an objective decision regarding their use.

Body

To begin with, solar ovens were invented by Palestinians in the Gaza strip and it works by capturing sunrays and using these for cooking. Specifically, the notion was invented by Basheer Kahlid but was implemented by Yousef Azeez. Both of them were residents of the Gaza strip. The invention was triggered by their lack of gas to cater for their gas or petrol to cater for their energy needs. Yaffe (2007) indicates that the Zionist enemy withheld petrol and gas from this population and since they did not have alternatives, they decided to use sun rays for cooking.

Then, solar ovens have unique features that enable them to function well and differentiate them from other types of oven. Mud and hay is used to construct the oven in order to prevent loss of heat that slows down the cooking process. The top of the oven is constructed using heat proof glass and a mirror that is used for directing the rays of the sun in the oven. In addition, it has an electric disk that is useful in instances when the weather is cloudy. The time for cooking using this solar oven is similar to the time employed by normal ovens.

Let us now review the advantages of solar ovens. First, solar ovens can be used for preparing any time of food and they do not contribute in any way to unwanted heat in the house. Radabaugh (1991) indicates that that this is important in reducing incidences of global warming. Secondly, the ovens do not use any type of fuel and as such, they help in saving natural resources such as forests, coal and other types of fossil fuels. Finally, they do not produce any smoke or green house gases to the atmosphere. This helps to keep the environment clean and reduce global warming. Then, the disadvantages of solar ovens are that food takes a significant period of time to cook and its effectiveness is entirely depended on the weather.

Conclusion

Solar ovens were invented by the Palestinians of Gaza and their unique features entail a mirror, hay, outer wall made of mud and heat proof glass. Its advantages are that it neither emits heat nor smoke to the atmosphere. It also saves on natural resources because it does not use fuel. The disadvantages are that they are slow and highly depended on sun rays. I believe use of solar ovens is essential in curbing environmental degradation. Let us save our environment by ‘going green’.
