The increasing changes in social, economic and political structure of the contemporary society, business environment, has equally been changing. It is important to note that both the producers and consumers have developed ways to achieve their satisfaction, and this defines the prevailing competition among firms. Many multinational corporations have been victims of higher costs of production against dwindling sales revenues. This can be attributed to poor management and overall lower quality products. In the past, many firms emphasized on mere production with little attention on the customer care, quality of the products and welfare of the workers. This has proved to be a great disadvantage to various businesses until the invention of six sigma concept. This is a complex process within the management structure of an organization that can only be explained by a systematic breakdown of the whole process. In the wake of globalization, most companies have adopted management policy geared towards proved statistical reports on the performance of the product in the market, process of manufacturing the product or offering the service, focus on the needs of the customers and efficiency on the side of the employees. Six sigma puts emphasis on measuring the quality to near perfection. In other words, it is an approach which is data-driven compounded with a methodology to eliminate any trace of defect in any management process in the organization. Standard deviation of six between the mean and the closest limit of product specification defines the concept of six sigma. The effort towards achievement of such accurate perfection is customer focused , attracts greater revenue to the company and boosts the image.

It is imperative to note that attaining such a level of near perfection incorporate outstanding management process. There is the effort of employees and other input factor investment by the organization. This is what brings in the concept of strategic management and inclusive involvement of different parties within the company structure. Within the organization, there are different divisions assigned various duties, but harmony is critical for high quality output. Emphasis on process improvement and reduction of variation is always the focus of six sigma as an improvement project. The practical application of six sigma in any company employs a methodology in DMAIC. The concept of DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) is a six sigma improvement system meant to adjust processes that are below the standard specification towards incremental improvement. It is worth to underscore the significance of the persons vested with supervisory authority over the six Sigma project. These individuals are referred to as Sigma Master Black Belts and the implementation is undertaken by Six Sigma Black Belts and Six Sigma Green Belts.

Successful execution of six sigma program yields desirable outcome to the organization. It helps in improving efficiency of the employees which translates to high quality products and services. Near perfect output meets the need of customers and boosts the aggregate performance of the organization. Adoption of technology and modern scientific process reduces cycle times; minimize costs and lead to much saving by the organization.
