FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!
You have the option of accepting one of the following two assignments:
You may pick a feature of American history from 1492 to 1877 and write an argumentative paper on that subject or; You can read the condensed version of Frederick Jackson Turner’s essay, “The Significance of the Frontier in American History” I have provided and write an argumentative paper giving your opinion of Turner’s theory. In your essay, you must briefly explain Turner’s thesis, offer your own thesis about it and make a convincing case for your point of view. This paper is due October 30, 2019. Organize your paper in this way:
Introduction: In the opening paragraph you will summarize the subject and introduce your thesis about it. A thesis statement declares what you believe and what you intend to prove. You will draw attention to your thesis statement by putting it in the form of this sentence: In this paper I will argue that …
Body: In the body of your essay you will build a strong case for your thesis offering evidence for your argument. If you are disagreeing with Turner, you should also refute or disprove his claims and evidence. Use one paragraph to state each point, following each statement with related evidence.
Conclusion: Restate your claim and summarize the evidence you provided that supports it.
Analyze the evidence that supports and opposes your thesis: What types of evidence are used? Does the evidence support your thesis? What is the main argument for each perspective? On what points do they agree or disagree? How did your readings change the way you understand the subject?
This paper will be five to six pages, typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font. The paper will include a cover page with the following information – in order single spaced and centered on the page in 12 point Times New Roman font:

All sources used for this paper will be properly cited in Chicago Style. Chicago writing style requires in-text documentation (footnotes) as well as a bibliography on a separate paper that is attached to the back of your paper. Wikipedia is not accepted as a source. You are limited to three internet sources and you must use a minimum of three books.
Plagiarism: Students who fail to give appropriate credit for ideas or material used from another source, are guilty of plagiarism (i.e., stealing the words or ideas of another).
The College may contract with companies or organizations that provide plagiarism-detection services. Such companies may receive students’ work for the purpose of comparing the students’ work with a reference database. Students enrolling at San Jacinto College agree as a condition of their enrollment that their work may be submitted to such companies for the purpose of plagiarism detection and that the company may retain a copy of the work for plagiarism-detection purposes. Such companies will not copy, use, or distribute the students’ work. Any student found guilty of plagiarism for this paper will receive a score of zero which will be factored into the student’s final grade for the class.
