Reconsideration for Admission
I am Tankurn Kotravivatana an international student at Diablo Valley College. I am transferring in the fall semester in the year 2011. After giving in my application, I got an acceptance letter from the University of California Riverside, to join in the coming semester. I will major in Mechanical Engineering.
I was accepted under the provision of maintaining my cumulative GPA at above 2.80. I have to pass CHEM 121(Chemistry II), and MATH 294 (Differential Equation). I passed the Chemistry course with a B grade. The problem is that I did not pass the math course, as I ended up with a D grade. This lowered lower my cumulative GPA to below 2.80. I know that it does not meet the University requirements. I am kindly asking for an exemption from this requirement. I have a valid reason and hope you will consider the case. The reason for the exemption is that during the spring semester, there was political unrest in Thailand and businesses suffered immensely. My family had a pressing problem and it needed to be dealt with.
There was an issue of misunderstanding between our company and a Japanese company concerning supply of business equipment. This resulted in a disaster for our company. My father tried to contact them, but was not successful. The reason is because his English is not good, creating a problem concerning mutual understanding. I am the first person in my family to study abroad. I have to help my family through the English skills learnt in the United States. With my English proficiency, it is easy to contact the Japanese company using modern means. It took me almost two months to solve this problem. I tried my best to pass my math course as it was my priority. Unfortunately, I did not pass as I expected and thus my grievances.
I accepted my failure for not passing my math 294 course. I passed the other math courses, which I had enlisted, as required such as MATH 192,193, and 292. I passed with excellent grades and also, obtained a pass in MATH 194 (linear algebra). This is proof of my potential for engineering math courses. As an engineer student; I know that MATH 294 is an essential course. I am asking UCR to give me an opportunity to retake MATH 294, or MATH 46, during the first quarter. As an international student, retaking only one course in a community college and reapplying to UCR, takes a lot of money and time.
Graduating at the University of California, Riverside, as a Mechanical Engineer, is a huge step for me and my family. I appreciate your time for reconsidering my admission. It would be a great opportunity, if I could take upper division classes at UCR. If there is a chance, I will make an effort to pursue my Engineering’s degree.
Sincerely
Tankurn Kotravivatana
