Introduction

Reader response in literary theory focuses on the reader or audience and the readers’ experiences of the particular literary work. This theory recognises the reader as an important agent who creates the real existence to work, and completes the meaning of the literary work through interpretation, or the reader creates a unique text related performance.

Most reader response critics insist that for one to understand the literary experience, or derive the meaning of a text, one must look at the processes the reader applies in creating the meaning and experience. Most critics assume that one can understand a text while maintaining the aspects of one’s culture, status, personality, and objectivity.

Wallentin et al, (2011) the book, Just Design: Socially Conscious for Critical Causes, by Christopher Simmons is about doing a good work that is replicated to doing good to the world as a critical aspect of design practice ethos. The book showcases diverse collections of people, causes, and inspiring projects. Just Design serves better in supporting existing causes to find out the hidden problems afflicting the world with the objective of celebrating positive change. Just Design pursues social change by using insights into his talents to change the world.

The book seeks response from readers in some of areas such as activism, social causes, social entrepreneurship, socially conscious news, and arts. Graphic designers like Christopher Simmons describe himself as a problem solver, who applies his creative talents to seek new ways and better innovative solutions to common questions. These questions are related to how best to articulate a corporate brand, how to connect with a particular audience, and how to communicate across cultural boundaries, or simply how to sell the most widgets. These are worthy pursuits that involve problem solving, as described by Charles Eames as design addressing itself to the need. In this world, there are many problems, and some are larger than the brand or consumers. Some societal needs are very fundamental such as equality, water, education, community, peace, justice, and hope. Most designers work according to their own interests and values, which must intersect with the interest of their profession, and the interest of the society as a whole, for the good of the society. Just design good design is better than bus schedule, product labels, freeway designs, and ballots which are critical designs in the designed society. These designs fabricate the visual landscape of the societal culture, such as in ancient societies adorned their buildings, vases, and public spaces with frescoes (Tompkins, 1980).

Paula Scher once lamented that today’s young designers have abandoned their roles as an improver of the general visual environment, instead work for projects they perceive is good for society. The projects included in the book are more noble and worthy than vernacular work of the profession. The purpose of the book is to celebrate the best cause based design, and not to marginalize the work most designers do every day whether for greater good, profit, or just design (Tompkins, 1980).

Conclusion

Just design is an imperative title that inspires the importance of simply doing something no matter the cause or goal, and whether the projects are a client or designer initiated. The success of the projects should come from an eagerness to work. It is important to participate through swift, thoughtful, and nimble action in a time of complexity, uncertainty, and unbridled acceleration. It is about making a difference, or can make a difference, or do both, or simply just design.
