Purpose and Audience
Purpose can be termed as the writer’s or author’s intention of writing an article for an audience. The illustration of purpose in articles emanates from the writer’s desire to show the reader his perspective, feelings, and opinions. An audience refers to the final consumers of art or work done by the authors. The audience can take many forms ranging from a single person, general audience, and group audience. This article demonstrates understanding of an audience and purpose through the development of ideas, language features, and structures by establishing the links between them. It does so by narrating a short story about teenage friendship, which commands attention in its use of imagery, explanations, analyses, explorations, critique, details, examples, and a range of viewpoints (Bryan Station High School, 2009).
Even though friendship is a natural phenomenon and is God-given and many people still take it for granted. Time comes but rarely in history to forget the past and focus on the new and present things. The weather in Sue was cold, and darkness came very early. The fluorescent lights shone brightly and the streets became pleasant when viewed through the window. Children played and had fun outside the shops, which portrayed an active ambience. Snow powdered the feathers of birds, chicken, and the fur of foxes. The wind blew their tails and turned their feathers. At the same period, Linda and I were going through trying times in the gradually blossoming friendship between us. Initially, we had a fractured friendship when her parents discovered the secret love affair between the two of us. Linda faced deadly threats from her parents. Her parents ordered her to shove off her dreams of being in a relationship with me. This halted the relationship and we stopped seeing each other for almost a month. It was not until this beautiful Sunday that we realized that we could never avoid suppressing the burning desire deep inside us. The desire to be together was more than the need for one’s life. I asked myself if ideal relationships took such a course. People who truly love each other go to the extent of dying for each other (Teena, 2013). I was no ready for that.
I must admit that the church hall was out of bounds by six o’clock in the evening. A woman sold roasted chestnuts at the church’s gate. We met there every evening and found that she was extremely polite and interested in the affairs between us. We sat on the concrete slab so that we could talk of love. It was warm standing in front of the charcoal fire. The woman’s chestnuts were also warm in the stomach. Linda was particularly young and beautiful. Her love was the only thing I could kill to get. She defined the meaning of love to me, and I could not help doing anything for her even if it meant wrestling with an angel. Such promises usually come with friendship commitments. Many relationships carry on by the partners’ promises to each other. It is hard to come by relationships that lack promises. This was normal (Alonna, 2013).
On this Sunday evening, a hush fell over Sue’s church hall. Linda and I were the only people present inside the church. The eloquence of silence in the church’s vicinity was the one that the dead could hear. Something terrible happened as we sat with Linda on a wooden bench trying to exchange feelings for each other. This was the turning point of my life. Linda began complaining about a headache followed by other myriad problems that I could not decipher. I resorted to wailing just to trigger help from nearby homesteads because I was unable to make a decision on what to do. Linda got rushed to the hospital, and I got arrested for interrogation. I did not know what had occurred to her. The only option I thought was to suffer the same fate (British Broadcasting Corporation, 2013).
Linda’s parents were breathing down my neck immediately after my arrest. They could not tolerate any of my innocent pleas. They had the determination to have me jailed to ensure that their daughter got out of danger. They had warned us severally from friendship. Linda’s condition is the reason why they did not believe in my innocence. She had succumbed to a comma and could neither speak nor talk. My parents fought tirelessly to soften the enmity that had grown so big because of my connection to Linda’s state of mind. Their struggle went in vain. Linda’s parents could settle at nothing other than seeing me spend days behind bars unless the doctors say something encouraging about her fate. Moreover, I could only be released when Linda regain consciousness and declares that I had not harmed her.
Linda regained her mental faculties after seven days. However, she could not tell anything concerning her admission to the hospital. Doctors only said that traces of pneumonia were present in the scrutiny of her blood. This served to tighten the grip that her parents had on my detainment. I got relieved when Linda asked for me and demanded that I accompany her in her admission ward. This was the most joyous moment in my life because she wanted to see nobody else except me. Her faces graced mine with happiness on my arrival. She could not help but fall for my ever-positive expression. She let out a charming grin that brightened my world. I reached out for her slender beautiful arms that were eagerly waiting for their perfect partners. As we hugged one another with lots of relief, she muttered consoling words to me. This was somewhat an impossible incident because I thought I would never have her. Hope was the only aspect, which kept as going. It is factual that, after such frustrations, nobody would still have the urge of keeping such a relationship (The Writing Center, University of California, 2012).
This editorial has demonstrated understanding of audience and purpose in its narration of the short story. The story has enshrined many stylistic devices, which serve to command attention from the audience and maintain their interest through suspense. Imagery is a common device that spans the structure of the narrative. Most importantly, the paper has developed ideas and made links between them throughout the paper by the use of a short story describing teenage friendship.
