Upholding of discipline within the police force is mandatory for effective functioning. The police officers that contravene the vital regulations that govern their mode of conduct often face various disciplinary actions depending on the severity of the offense. These according to Bender (2005) include being issued with a warning letter that advise the same to make necessary improvements with regard to behavior or face more strict measures in future; removal or dismissal from duty that may be done with or without any form of notice; suspension from duty for a specific period of time within which the officer may not be paid or may be given half salary; demotion of the respective police officer to a lower rank; uncompensated duty that requires the officers to work without pay; transfer of the officer to another station in order to reclaim public approval and finally resignation of the officer that is usually without duress. In severe cases, Delattre (2002) asserts that a combination of two measures can be undertaken.
Having a comprehensive and effective disciplinary policy within the force is very important for two main reasons. First, Delattre (2002) indicates that it minimizes incidences of abuse of the authority that the police officers are accorded. Secondly, it plays a critical role in promoting and upholding professionalism and enhancing police performance. A viable policy needs to be anchored on certain requisites that include employee experience that determines the expertise and skills of the same; employee motivation; the historical record of the employee that details the officers’ offenses and intentional and unintentional errors that explains whether the offense was mainly of one’s making. Notably, these influence the type of disciplinary action that the officer is accorded.
