Code of Ethics: An Encountered Ethical Dilemma

Nursing is considered an honorable profession for a person to choose as a lifelong desiredoccupation. Within the nursing profession, nurses encountered numerous situations that may conflict their morals, ethics, and values. The Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements is the standard ethical practice in any situation a nurse may encounter. With that being said, in this case study I will review the patient’s scenario, the purpose and description of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, identify which Provision(s) assist my critical thinking decisions, and finally develop the nursing process that reflects the Code of Ethics.ScenarioIn my given scenario for this case study provided by my Chamberlain College of Nursingprofessor; I was given an ethical dilemma related to my hypothetical patient. For the past severalweeks I have been the primary nurse for an elderly woman whom is suffering from terminal breast cancer. As her primary nurse I have developed a strong bond with this patient. Due to herbeing terminally ill she is in great deal of pain and one night my patient was in such immense pain that during that night, my patient told me that she is feeling discourage and wants “it all to end.” Also, my terminally ill patient states to me that, “if you really care about me, you will not make me suffer” (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2012).
