Leadership Self-Assessment Profile

Good leadership skills are obtainable, yet it depends on individual ability and desire to acquire it. Leadership is an opportunity and disappointment (Marshall and Broome, 2017). The CliftonStrengths Finder assessment survey is consists of 34 themes. My top five CliftonStrengths self-assessment reports are restoratives, connectedness, learner, analytical, and responsibility. My five themes breakdown, two fell under execution, one fell under relationship building, and two fell under strategic thinking while none under influences. The Gallup Strengths Finder self-assessment results reveal my strengths and behaviors. I will use my personalized results, and reports to maximize my potential (Rath, T., 2007).

Core Values

The two core values I would like to strengthen are communication and leadership. The ability to communicate effectively is an essential skill for nurse leaders. I have to practice talking slowly, be mindful of body language and facial expression when networking with others. As a nurse leader, I would like to foster interdisciplinary communication through emails and phone calls with other leaders. For example, not wait for meetings to reach out to fellow leaders. I am receptive to staff input, both positive and negative. As a nurse leader, I would allow for discussion, encourages interaction, results in positive feelings toward the organization, and improved attitude in the workplace. Several studies have shown, good communication skills are associated with better patient outcomes and higher employee satisfaction.

Two Strengths

The two strengths from CliftonStrengths to improve would be learner and self-assurance strengths. Although, the learner is among my top five themes still want to improve on. Advanced education and self-assurance go a long way in the healthcare industry. Knowledge is power, and when you are well educated, you feel more confident in your abilities. As a master nursing student at Walden University, I utilize the library, course reading, conferences, and Academic Skills Center resources to build my knowledge as a learner to educated myself, patient, and coworkers.

Secondly, self-confidence is an essential part of leadership. As a leader with self-confidence, I think positively about the future and take risks necessary to achieve my personal and professional goals. Self-confidence can be improved and build. Not every leader is born with natural self-confidence.Sometimes, I doubt myself I reach out to experts, mentors, and role models to address the concern and resolve my fear towards successful outcomes.

Two characteristics

The character traits to strengthen are focus and courage. To focus in nursing is vital for self and the multi-disciplinary team. I have the habits of multi-tasking at work. Sometimes, I overwork myself at work and forget to take a break until my shift is over. I have to learn to focus on one thing at a time to avoid burnout in the long run. In nursing multi-tasking and fast pace has become a habit, and the ability to concentrate is becoming more difficult. According to Numminen et al., 2017, nurses need moral courage in all areas and at all levels of nursing. As a nurse leader, it essential to have the courage to say no when not able to complete or partake in the organization project. For example, at my job six months ago, I was assigned to a new role without enough timeframe to complete the previous project. I have to speak up and say no to avoid burnout and letting the organization down, if unable to meet the dateline. Besides, nurses need the courage to advocate for patients, self, and coworkers when things are unrealistic at their organization.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.
