Write Essay body (three paragraphs).
First paragraph (450 words)
It should have ongoing learning and reflection on your own cultural beliefs, values and attitudes, and the influence these may have on providing health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Example: It is important to include reflection about how your own social and cultural locations, including your beliefs, values and attitudes, may influence your future health care practice with Aboriginal patients, their families, and Aboriginal health workers. Identify some actual beliefs, values and/or attitudes. Describe with an example how as a health care professional your belief values and attitudes may influence them.
Second Paragraph (450 words)
Provide culturally safe and responsive health care for and with your Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
In this Paragraph, briefly define concept of cultural safety, self-determination and provide an academic reference. Draw on the concept of cultural safety and self-determination to support the kinds of health service delivery to your Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
Example: Write from ‘I’: imagine yourself, as a health professional, interacting with Aboriginal patients, and their families. The focus is on your individual health care practice; describe some actual practices and strategies and how you will implement them. Describe with an example.

For example, some actual practices and strategies can be communication strategies, cultural competency training, or specific patient care approaches or other (Search it). When it comes to communication strategies consider what would work for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and how you would do it. As far as specific actions think what you could do that displaces the power dynamic and that could make Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people trust you as a nurse. The key to these is to think what creates connection and this is usually through simple, yet powerful things. Remember as well that you should describe what and how you would do from the first-person perspective.
Third Paragraph (300 words)
Advocate for health service delivery that ensures health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Explain with an example.
In this paragraph define collaboration and draw on the concept of collaboration for advocacy, provide an academic reference.
Example: Imagine you are working as a health professional in a health service of some kind: a hospital, community clinic etc. You need to write from ‘I’. Consider: what activities might you undertake to help create a health service which ensures health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? Briefly explain your role in implementing these activities
Conclusion (150 words only)
- Summarize your main points in light of your reflection.
- Draw on these points in support of your argument for the importance of becoming a culturally safe health professional.
