Background Information
Self actualization and definition of self characteristics is the product of the society and parental guidance of a person. A personality is a relative virtue which is adopted in different ways by different people. However, being a socially and psychologically upright are some of the characteristics of personality mostly found in learning institution. One of the main goal and objectives of colleges and university is to prepare students to be self-reliant, empowered, and knowledgeable citizens in the society. The modern world presents an environment of challenges, and thus students in learning institutions seek an environment that supports their creativity, talents, as well as encouraging them through learning, both in the classroom and outside (Hinchey, 2001, 64). Student are very special learners who are always keen to learn new things, thus in every community, students, and their instructors are supposed to work in togetherness in the given learning environment to accomplish education processes in trust and respect for both.
In such an environment, certain guidelines provide focus on particular issues that may affect party, student, and the institution. The basis of such guidelines and rules are presented under the students’ rights in the institution (Churchman, White, & Williams, 2009, 33). The purpose of this paper therefore is to determine and analyze the importance of the student rights in colleges and universities. Given the literatures that exist in this field of study, little research has been conducted to uncover the aspects of student rights. This proposed study will therefore, be significant in exploring the deep rooted factors of student rights in colleges and universities.
Statement of the Problem
The trends in unethical issues among students in various institutions in the United Kingdom have taken a shift from the ancient professional and educational values to modern time civilization (Hinchey, 2001, 76). Most students have failed to completely comprehend the dynamism of rights, scope of their rights, and the rights they have themselves. Not only are the students caught up in this ignorance fiasco, most instructors too have lost focus on their student’s rights of the learning environment, the rights to be taught not only to be economically responsible, but also to be socially responsible citizens (Robinson & Sullivan, 2001, 112). Unlike in the past, during inventions era, students and their supervisors aimed at developing new discoveries aimed at solving social problems. Significant changes in the nature of rights associated to students in the university and colleges have changed today. Statistics shows that a higher number of students make decisions of joining Universities based on the rights of the student prevalent in the institution.
Research Objectives
The proposed study will seeks to analyze and uncover the aspects of student rights in the United Kingdom given the available data on student rights in the learning institution. However, more specifically, the study will be focusing on the following particular objectives:
To define common student rights as per the Universities and Colleges within the United Kingdom
To analyze the factors that affect student rights in the modern United Kingdom society and institution of higher learning
To examine the emerging ethical issues surrounding the student rights in these institutions
To examine the role of the management of these institutions in protecting and enforcing the rights of the student
Research Questions
In order to be focused on the topic of study and conduct the proposed study according to the stated objectives, the following research questions will offer proper guidelines to stay on course answering the contentious issues that concerns student rights in the universities and colleges in the United Kingdom
What are the common scopes of student rights in colleges and universities in the United Kingdom?
What factors undermine the student rights in United Kingdom?
What are the roles of the higher institutions in the United Kingdom in effecting the rights of the student?
What are the key emerging ethical issues that concerns student rights in the colleges and universities?
Scope of the Study
This proposed study on the rights of student within the universities and colleges will be limited to the institutions of higher learning in the United Kingdom. Based on the specific approach that the study will adopt, i.e. the socio-political aspects, economical, psychological, educational, organizational, cultural, as well as the interpersonal aspects of the topic, the study will be limited to United Kingdom. Narrowing the scope, the study will be conducted based on particular groups (sample) of students, colleges and universities as well as examination of particular student cases. However, the study may not dig deep into varied perspectives of personal lives due to the protection of confidentiality rights.
Reviews
As noted by Herrington (2010, 45), scholarly knowledge has been and will be part and parcel of human wealth. Parks (2013, 98-9) notes student rights encompass their civil and constitutional rights, and other contractual rights which give the students to advantage of their educational investments. Speech, association, equality, privacy and safety among others are some of the basic and fundamental student rights in the learning institutions. According to Warnick (2013, 87), most f these rights are in line with the human rights which are protected by the constitution and cannot be in any way violated. Most institutions of higher learning in the countries of the European Union, and other parts of the world have the rights of students and their responsibilities comprehensively clear and accessible. Although there have been numerous critics of how the rights of students are legitimized, particularly following the students movement and unions, Churchman, White, & Williams (2009, 56), put it that many learning institutions have progressed into making these rights and responsibilities of the student easily accessible and are not undermined.
Notably, the studies that have focused on the student rights in the learning institutions like colleges and universities have limited literature that can effectively address the problems and emerging factors that affect the student rights in such institutions. This proposed study therefore, will use the available information, and use exploratory techniques of research to acquire the relevant information that help to address the topic of study.
