Cognition, Language, and Intelligence Worksheet

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Create a problem scenario to respond to the following questions:

In my scenario I went a lakehouse for vacation and after a 4 hours drive I found that the lakehouse was out of gas for the heater and the kitchen applances. After few minutes thinking on how to solve the situation I finally came with a solution of going to the nearest store to buy a small electrical stove since the temperature is warm enough that heater is not important at this time of the year.

What is the problem?

The problem in this case was not having gas during a weekend at the lakehouse. It was a problem because I didn’t have another way to cook my meals during the weekend and there was no way to go to any restaurant three times a day.

What problem-solving approach would you implement to solve this problem?

In this case I could use:

8D problem solving Process

Appreciative Inquiry

Hurson’s Productive Thinking model

Which approach was effective? Why?

The most effective one was the hursons productive thinking model, because I need to be creative to find a solution and that way I came with the idea of a temporary solution by going to a supermarket and buy a small electrical one and that way avoid a ling trip back for gas.

What were some obstacles or barriers you faced in solving the problem?

The possibility of going all the way back home to refill the gas tank.

How far can be the nearest supermarket.

The supermarket being close or out of electrical stoves.

You have received several job offers from different companies and must decide which job to accept. All jobs are the same position with the same duties, but vary in salary, benefits, company size, and distance from your home. Using the additive decision making model, outline the process you would go through to determine which job is best for you. Explain why.

Job #1

Salary: $35,000

Benefits: medical insurance paid; 5 days paid vacation each year; free lunch every day

Company size: medium (200-500 employees)

Distance from home: 20 miles

Job #2

Salary: $38,500

Benefits: medical insurance partially paid; 10 days paid vacation each year

Company size: large (10,000+ employees)

Distance from home: 35 miles

Job #3

Salary: $35,000

Benefits: medical insurance partially paid; work from home 3 days per week; 5 days paid vacation each year

Company size: medium (200-500 employees)

Distance from home: 15 miles

Job #4

Salary: $34,000

Benefits: medical insurance paid; 15 days paid vacation each year

Company size: small (1-199 employees)

Distance from home: 10 miles

In this exercise, I would choose job number 4 because compared to job 1,the salary is close but the distance is long shorter and having less employees th opportunity for promotion is better in job #4.

Compared to job 2 salary in job 2 is better but distance in job 2 will require expenses, plus the medical insurance will be paid only partially in job 2, also the promotion opportunity in a job of over 10000 employees is really hard.

Compared to job #3 distance is close and salary is close but medical expenses are not fully covered in job#3 and 15 days of fully rest are better the 3 days of work from home every week.

Job #4 Clearly cover my needs better than the other 3 jobs.

Components of Language

Define the following terms in your own words and provide an example of each.

Phonemes- Word that sound similar but are different by one letter, for example, bad and bat or pad and pat.

Morphemes- is the smallest unit in gramatic, it can be a word or part of another word for example cat, car can be example of a word and s, ed are examples of a part in another word.

Grammar- Rules that decide how words, phrases and sentences should be build.

Syntax- syntax determine how word and phrases should be organized to create a well organized sentence.

Semantics- It is concentrated in the meanings of the words.

Pragmatics- In this one the main goal is to study what wors mean in any specific situation. For example when we talk about somebody we can say.

Jason is driving a car. Then we can say he is a good driver.

In that second sentence we don’t mention any name, however we know that the speaker is talking about Jason as he/she mentioned him in the first sentence.

Theories of Intelligence

Review the three main theories of intelligence, using Table 7.2 in the text. Describe which theory best explains your intellectual development.

Practical Intelligence identify myself better because I have the hability of adapt easy to any change in the environment around me. If I have a lot of technology around I can use the internet, cellphone, music device etc. If is the opposite way I can just use the traditional postal service and find wood or rock around me to create my own entertainment. Same thing if I’m outside and the weather changes I just need to go inside grab some warm and dry layers and go back outside .
